About the Cover

Cover Figure

Cover photograph (Copyright © 2008, American Society for Microbiology. All Rights Reserved.): An unconventional organization of genes in the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The previously overlooked gene NAG1 (shown in blue) is nested antisense and opposite of the gene YGR031W (shown in red) on yeast chromosome VII (circular inset). NAG1 encodes a protein that localizes to the yeast cell periphery, and YGR031W encodes a mitochondrial protein. To illustrate this point, each protein product is represented diagrammatically and has been mapped onto a three-dimensional image of a yeast cell. Mitochondria are shown in red; the cell is tinted blue to indicate the presence of Nag1p at the cell periphery. (See related article on page 1289.)
